Software Engineering Leader -
SaaS & AI Platform Architect
Hello! My name is Marian Veteanu, and I’m a Director of Software Engineering and Technology Leader with a deep passion for software development, architecture, and building high-performing teams. I specialize in leading the design and delivery of innovative platforms that drive real-world impact. Whether scaling enterprise solutions, mentoring engineers, or shaping product direction, I bring a balanced approach of technical expertise and leadership experience. In the evenings and late at night, you’ll often find me working on side projects, or diving into emerging technologies and architectural patterns.
From Early Coding to Technical Mastery
My journey in tech began at 13, fueled by curiosity and a ZX-Spectrum 48K clone (HC-90). Like many 8-bit computers of its time, it came with built-in BASIC, which I quickly outgrew as I set my sights on machine-level coding. I dove headfirst into Z80 assembly, spending countless nights coding, optimizing, and reverse-engineering games—laying the foundation for a lifelong fascination with low-level systems and performance optimization. One example from this period is 'Atomix', a game I recently recovered from an audio cassette.
Parallel to this, I gained early access to PCs and immersed myself in DOS, exploring executable file formats, FAT structures, and INT 21h interrupts. And so, I founded my first garage software initiative—VMASOFT—writing DOS software in Pascal and x86 assembly. Many of these early creations still live in my legacy GitHub repository. These include graphics libraries like MCGA, windowing systems like VMAWin, and even exploratory work in virus behavior (all safely archived, of course).
From there, I moved into Windows development, mastering Delphi and building commercial products like PowerTests Desktop — a test assessment suite adopted by several schools. This project became a launchpad for my first entrepreneurial SaaS venture: PowerTests.NET, built using classic ASP and the IE 4.0 DOM model. I handled the full lifecycle—from architecture to marketing—and even published technical articles on emerging web technologies of the time.
Engineering Leadership in Enterprise Innovation
My entrepreneurial path evolved into enterprise-grade innovation when I joined STARLIMS (later acquired by Abbott Laboratories).
In my tenure of over two decades at STARLIMS / Abbott, I held architecture and senior engineering leadership roles. I drove multi-million-dollar platform initiatives that delivered enterprise-grade solutions for global clients and drove significant long-term savings through forward-looking architecture and strategy.
I led multiple product teams, mentored engineers across levels, and championed best practices in software architecture, security, and product lifecycle management.
I also remained deeply technical, shaping architectural strategy using .NET, Azure/AWS cloud services, event-driven microservices, and emerging GenAI (LLM, RAG) technologies.
From building greenfield platforms to modernizing legacy systems, I consistently delivered scalable solutions that combined innovation, business impact, and engineering excellence.
Beyond my professional journey, I regularly write about leadership, engineering culture, and innovation on LinkedIn, sharing lessons learned, insights from the field, and perspectives on where technology is heading. You’re invited to explore my LinkedIn articles and join the discussion.
Entrepreneurship in EdTech
After my tenure at STARLIMS / Abbott, I launched codeguppy.com, an EdTech SaaS platform designed to help CS teachers and librarians introduce young learners to coding. Currently used by about 38K users.
I architected and developed the platform end-to-end, authored educational content, and grew its reach through a multi-channel presence on YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and TikTok. This venture allowed me to blend technical execution, product strategy, and community growth—transforming a passion for teaching into a scalable business that combined platform development with modern digital engagement.
CodeGuppy is actually my third incursion into EdTech software, following PowerTests (.NET and Desktop) and even earlier attempts with Physics and Mecano under DOS, both projects that predated my career at STARLIMS / Abbott.
Fractional CTO Services
In addition to my entrepreneurial work, I offer fractional CTO services for startups and growing companies that need experienced, strategic technology leadership without the commitment of a full-time hire.
I help organizations migrate to Azure cloud infrastructure and design practical AI strategies involving LLMs, RAG pipelines, multi-component architectures, and AI agents. I also ensure data privacy through secure deployments.
I provide interim leadership during transitions, evaluate technology stacks in M&A contexts to reduce risk, and guide teams in evolving their MVPs into scalable, production-ready platforms.
Hire me 🤝
I am excited to join an organization where I can make an impact—whether as a fractional CTO providing strategic leadership or in a full-time role driving technology and product innovation. Let’s connect and explore opportunities — message me on LinkedIn or on X
